Devon's Story

"In our 2006 United Way campaign, Brown Bagging for Calgary's Kids was the featured charity for one of our morning cafes. The BI&T department held a challenge amongst the Infrastructure and DAS teams to gather food for their program and blew BB4CK away. They had to go and get a truck to haul the food back to their kitchen. I had personally worked in the school system for several years running one of their computer labs and saw first hand children who would come to school without food for lunch. At that time the school had sharing tables set up so children who did not want to eat something from their lunch could put it on the sharing table and children without lunch would be able to help themselves ( not the best balanced diet). The BB4CK program really pulled at my heart strings and I decided to approach our BI&T leads to see if they would be willing to allow members of our department to volunteer for 3 hours once a month to make lunches. BB4CK depends on volunteers. They approved and I put the word out to our department and of course the giving spirit of BI&T came through.   Devon was the first corporation to commit to coming in once a month to volunteer and BB4CK are always happy to see us.  All of our volunteers have found it lots of fun and very rewarding.

"Our leadership team have approved this volunteer initiative again for 2008 so we will be supplying volunteers again this year which I am very pleased about as I feel we are really contributing to our community." - Carol Markell

Every day, thousands of kids go hungry in Calgary. Lack of proper nutrition leads to decreased concentration in school, poor health, lack of attention and reduced academic performance.

Their future is our future. Make it your problem.
